Our Bliss-ful Maiden Voyage

J: How do you feel about his and her boats?
Me: What the heck am I going to do with my own boat? I don’t even know how to sail the one we’ve got.
J: Don’t worry. It will be fun.

And, that’s how we decided to get Bliss, a 31-foot 1974 Seafarer.

One of J’s Seafarer group members was trying to unload her on the cheap and we happily took him up on his offer. This way we had the opportunity to spend the summer in the water, and I had the chance to learn how to sail on a very similar boat to the one we’d be making our big trip on. So for Memorial Day Weekend we grabbed a few friends and attempted to sail her from Rock Hall, MD to Brooklyn.

Our friend Tonia is a Captain and was kind enough to teach me how to sail. We had a crew of four and a whole weekend full of adventure. J has plenty of sailing experience, but I didn’t even know the difference between Starboard and Port when I first stepped into the cockpit (also a newly learned term). I learned so much from Tonia – “Right, Red, Returning to Port” – and even managed to sail a night shift that dumped me into the Delaware Bay with all the big boys. While slightly terrifying, I knew I had to get used to it. The best part of the trip for me was when I woke up from my sleep shift and there was not another boat around and I couldn’t see land. It was so blissfully peaceful. Before we knew it we were swimming with the dolphins and soaking up some sun. I can’t wait to get back out on the water!

{This may have been one of the coolest marinas I’ve been to. They even had a pool!}

{My favorite spot on the boat Рso relaxing up here. Jean likes it too.}

{J enjoying some peace and quiet in the Deleware Bay.}

{Waking up to this sure made sailing through the night worth it! So amazing.}

{Seeing these dolphin so close made me so excited for what’s to come. This will be my every day!}
